4 TO 6 WEEKS BEFORE MOVING

Tour your house to decide items to be discarded or given away.

Garage Sale?

Contact doctors and dentist. Get referrals to new care providers if moving away. Get copies of prescriptions.

Arrange transfer of school records. Transfer memberships for church, clubs, etc.

Check with insurer to make sure move is covered. Be sure your new home is covered by policy transfer or new policy.

Start preparing house plants for move.

Determine best way to move pets.

3 WEEKS BEFORE MOVING

Notify post office. Get change of address cards and notify contacts, subscriptions, and insurers (health, life, auto, home).

Have major appliances serviced prior to move. Have autos serviced if long trip.

Use up inflammable items or ammunition. Movers won’t take them.

Obtain birth records and other legal records. Check if your will should be rewritten if another jurisdiction.

Make travel reservations for trip.

Plan to use up food before move. Freezer?

2 WEEKS BEFORE MOVING

Choose items you wish to pack and get packing materials.

Label boxes.

Close or transfer all charge accounts. Return borrowed items & collect items you have loaned.

Arrange to discontinue utilities and deliveries- water, electric, gas, telephone, fuel garbage, milk, newspaper.

Arrange for connection of utilities in new home.

Draw up a floor plan of new home and indicate placement of furniture for movers.

1 WEEK BEFORE MOVING

Transfer bank accounts and ask local credit bureau to transfer records to new location. Deposit box?

Set aside maps, games, snacks, flashlight and other items to take in car.

Drain water from garden hoses.

Drain gasoline from lawn mower and prepare propane tanks for move.

Leave all items to be packed by mover in place – it makes the unpacking easier.
